Icke’s core ideas are outlined in four books written over seven years: The Robots’ Rebellion (1994), … And the Truth Shall Set You Free (1995), The Biggest Secret: The Book that Will Change the World (1999), and Children of the Matrix (2001). The basic conspiracy theory is that the world is controlled by a network of secret societies referred to as the “Brotherhood,” at the apex of which stand the “Illuminati” or “Global Elite.” The goal of the Brotherhood is a world government, a plan that Icke says was laid out in the The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (in reality, long established as a Czarist hoax) which Icke says are really the revealed plans of the Illuminati. Trans World Airlines (TWA) Flight 800, a Boeing 747-131, tail number N93119, crashed on July 17, 1996, about 20:31 EDT (00:31, July 18 UTC), in the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York. TWA Flight 800 was a scheduled international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York, New York, to Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport (FCO), Rome, Italy via Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG), Paris, France. The flight departed JFK about 20:19, with two pilots, two flight engineers, 14 flight attendants, and 212 passengers on board. All 230 people on board were killed, and the airplane was destroyed.

Area 51 is a nickname for a military base that is located in the southern portion of Nevada in the western United States (83 miles north-northwest of downtown Las Vegas). Situated at its center, on the southern shore of Groom Lake, is a large secretive military airfield. The base’s primary purpose is to support development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems.

According to Gordon Thomas’s book Gideon’s Spies: Mossad’s Secret Warriors the assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II was ordered by Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini as a first act of Jihad against Christianity and the West. This theory is based on the following elements: the Grey Wolves organization was pro-Iranian; Mehmet Ali A?ca was trained in Iran; the text of a 1979 letter sent to the press by Mehmet Ali A?ca just after he killed a Turkish journalist used formulas such as “Supreme Commander of the Crusaders” that are directly taken from Khomeini’s style, while A?ca is nearly illiterate. The pope’s jailhouse visit in 1983 to his aggressor was intended to confirm this theory, just uncovered by the Israeli intelligence agency.

Pope John Paul I died in September 1978, only a month after his election to the papacy. The timing of his death and the Vatican’s alleged difficulties with ceremonial and legal death procedures have fostered several conspiracy theories. British author David Yallop in 1984 wrote the book In God’s Name suggested that John Paul I died because he was about to uncover financial scandals allegedly involving the Vatican. John Cornwell responded to Yallop’s charges in 1987 with A Thief In The Night, in which he analyzed the various allegations and denied the conspiracy. According to Eugene Kennedy, writing for the New York Times, Cornwell’s book “helps to purge the air of paranoia and of conspiracy theories, showing how the truth, carefully excavated by an able journalist in a refreshing volume, does make us free.”

Bible conspiracy theories posit that much of what is known about the Bible, in particular the New Testament, is a deception. These theories variously claim that Jesus really had a wife, Mary Magdalene, and children, that a group such as the Priory of Sion has secret information about the bloodline of Jesus, the Jesus did not die on the cross and that the carbon dating of the Shroud of Turin was part of a conspiracy by the Vatican to suppress this knowledge, that there was a secret movement to censor books that truly belonged in the Bible, or the Christ myth theory, proposed for example in Zeitgeist, the Movie as a means of social control by the Roman Empire.

Conspiracy theories rejecting the legitimacy of President of the United States Barack Obama’s citizenship and his eligibility to be President have circulated before and after his victory in the 2008 presidential election. Some of these conspiracy theories allege that Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii, and that his birth certificate is a forgery.

Other conspiracy theories allege that Obama is a citizen of Indonesia, or that because he had dual citizenship at birth (British and American), he is not a natural born citizen of the US. Being a natural born citizen is a requirement to be President of the United States under Article Two of the United States Constitution.

On April 25, 2009, Wayne Madsen (investigative journalist) reported claims that some UN World Health Organization officials and scientists believed the 2009 new H1N1 strain of swine flu virus appeared to be the product of gene splicing, as opposed natural processes, citing as evidence the presence of genetic material from strains not occurring in pigs (such as bird flu and different forms of human flu), the lack of transmission from pigs to humans and the flu disproportionately affecting young adults when compared to other strains of flu.

The virus was later declared by the CDC to be a combination of four different viruses: North American swine flu, North American avian flu, human H1N1 flu and a swine flu strain found in Asia and Europe.

New Scientist magazine cited the example of a H1N2 influenza pandemic in the 1990s that only affected pigs in the United Kingdom. This subtype of the H1N2 was also a reassortment (mix) of swine, human and avian strains.
